Lai Wah Heen - Food Court Quality at Gourmet Prices - Unbelievable

When we walked into LAI WAH HEEN in Toronto's Metropolitan Hotel, the room was nearly empty - a bad sign, and things just got worse from there.  The dining room itself is representative of a four-star hotel with a modern Art Deco feel and first-rate service. We started with Duckling Rainbow Chop in Crystal Fold on the recommendation of our server and it was excellent, perhaps even worth the $28. I ordered the seafood Hot & Sour soup which was unimpressive, even by Spadina standards. There Deep-fried jumbo prawns glazed with sweet wine sauce tasted like sweet-and-sour shrimp mixed with a little bit of cheap wine (maybe that's what it was). Other dishes were even less memorable.

In the end, we spent about $130 for what could be considered "food court Chinese".  I think their biggest problem is an oversized menu featuring lots of mediocre food.  Perhaps if they offered two dozen excellent things rather than foie gras, de-boned New Zealand lamb shank and other non-traditional choices, they would offer good dishes. Another problem may be opening a sister restaurant, Lai Toh Heen, located at 692 Mount Pleasant Rd., 416-489-8922.

It's a funny, you can no longer trust print media recommendations.  (I think the advertising dollars are too important for them to write a bad review.) We however belief the Metropolitan hotel's LAI WAH HEEN is probably Toronto's most overrated restaurant and we also have learned to trust the Internet over the traditional media.
