The Nine Dollar Potato

Actually, the potatoes at Morton's Steak House in Toronto only cost $6.75 but when you add Canada's ridiculous 15 percent restaurant tax and a 15 percent tip, a potato ends up costing about nine dollars.

No one can fault Morton's for the quality of their steak: they only use prime USDA aged beef - among the best in the world - Char-broiled at an extremely high temperature, and served exactly as ordered.  On a recent visit my  $46 dollar "Sauce béarnaise 14 oz. Double Filet Mignon" was a fabulous piece of meet served medium rare, exactly as requested.  The steak was great and the service was excellent but all you get for the price is the steak.  The potato, the vegetables, everything else, with the exception of the bread, is extra.

Also, the soups, hors d'oeuvres, and starters are expensive and my lobster bisque tasted like a high-end frozen soup with a rubbery piece of lobster thrown on top for good measure.  At $12 dollars, this premium priced soup was a huge disappointment - well below expectations.  My friend's Sliced Beefsteak Tomato with Blue Cheese was definitely good, but once again, somewhat overpriced.  Her main was the $28 dollar shrimp pasta with high-quality shrimp. This is a good choice if you are not a meat eater. We shared a desert, I had a beer, She a glass of wine, and the bill was about $160.00 Canadian dollars, plus tip.

It's quite common in Toronto to pay $23 dollars for a 7 oz. Steak, so $46 dollars for 14 oz. filet mignon is not outrageous and the steak was superb.  The biggest complaint I have was the expensive, less then perfect soup, and the fact that the main dishes do not include vegetables.

Morton’s is an excellent restaurant choice to reward an important client  This is a place which most people would like to try at least once but it's not a restaurant offering great value.  It's a good place to visit when someone else's is paying the bill.

And how was the Nine Dollar Potato?  It was a “Baked Idaho Potato”™ served with your choice of real bacon bits, sour cream and butter.  The potato didn’t seem any better than a PEI potato or an Ontario potato, but then again, I always wanted to try a Nine Dollar Potato!
